this article from the daily mail is worth a read. apparently, a leading neuroscientist has claimed that social networking sites (i.e. facebook, myspace) are damaging the youth of today, decimating attention spans and creating a generation unable to pry themselves away from their screens or forge real relationships with other people.
and that’s not all. consider this case of a young man who announced his suicide on facebook via his status update. then of course there’s facebook infidelity and breakups.
of course, those last few examples are extremes.
but it’s worth thinking about. is our addiction to this technology making us into children who are “attracted by buzzing noises and bright lights, who have a small attention span and who live for the moment”? do these sites “shorten attention spans, encourage instant gratification and make young people more self-centred”?
is the apocalypse here?
and if so, does it tweet?
